Thai police have painted a chilling picture of an Australian man who allegedly maintained an outwardly ‘normal life’ after brutally murdering a teenage girl and callously stuffing her body into a suitcase. Simon Peter Carman, 54, is accused of the shocking crime that has reverberated from Pattaya to his home country.
According to reports from the ABC, Thai authorities allege that Carman, originally from Adelaide, continued with mundane tasks such as washing his clothes, socialising with neighbours, and venturing out to local shops in the days following the death of the 17-year-old victim, identified only as ‘Warissara’. This stark contrast between the alleged horrific act and his subsequent behaviour has stunned investigators and the community alike.
Discovery That Shocked Pattaya
The grim discovery was made after Warissara's dismembered remains were found crammed into a suitcase, partially sunk in a pond within a wooded area in Pattaya. Police were called to the scene after local residents reported a foul smell emanating from the water. The subsequent investigation quickly led authorities to Carman, who had reportedly been in a relationship with the young Thai woman.
Police Colonel Jiraphat Phongphitak, chief investigator for Nong Prue police, told the ABC that Carman’s composure after the alleged murder was a key detail in the ongoing probe. “He lived his normal life, talking to neighbours and doing his daily routines, like washing his clothes,” Colonel Phongphitak stated, highlighting the suspect’s apparent nonchalance. The incident has cast a disturbing shadow over the popular tourist destination, prompting renewed concerns about the safety of young people.
A Complex Relationship and Missing Funds
Investigators are exploring the nature of Carman’s relationship with Warissara, which is understood to have been known to her family. While details remain scant, early reports suggest a complex dynamic, with police probing potential financial motives. It is understood that Warissara’s family had reported her missing to police after failing to make contact for several days. They reportedly held concerns for her wellbeing, which tragically proved to be well-founded.
Sources close to the investigation have indicated that police are examining whether a sum of approximately 20,000 Thai Baht (roughly AUD $800) that was given to Carman by Warissara’s family to assist her, might have played a role in the tragic events. The disappearance of this money, coupled with the victim’s sudden absence, raised red flags for her concerned relatives and, subsequently, for law enforcement. The motive, however, remains a central focus for detectives.
Arrest and Denial of Guilt
Carman was apprehended by Thai police in Rayong, a coastal province south-east of Bangkok. While details of his arrest have not been fully disclosed, it is understood to have been a swift operation based on forensic evidence and witness statements. Following his arrest, Carman was subjected to extensive questioning by Thai authorities.
Despite the mounting evidence presented by police, Carman has reportedly denied his involvement in the murder. His refusal to confess has complicated the investigation, forcing police to rely heavily on forensic analysis and circumstantial evidence gathered from the crime scene and his residence. Thai legal processes for serious crimes such as murder can be lengthy and rigorous, and Carman is expected to face a protracted legal battle. The Australian Consulate-General in Bangkok is providing consular assistance to Carman, as is standard practice for Australian citizens detained overseas.
