A 21-year-old man has been critically injured after being shot by police officers following an alleged confrontation in Sydney’s south-west, triggering an independent critical incident investigation.
The incident unfolded on Thursday morning when frontline officers were dispatched following reports of a member of the public behaving erratically and making verbal threats. According to preliminary statements released by NSW Police and reported by ABC News NSW, the situation rapidly escalated upon the arrival of law enforcement, culminating in at least one service firearm being discharged.
Paramedics were immediately called to the suburban location to treat the 21-year-old, who sustained gunshot wounds before being transported under police escort to a major tertiary trauma centre in a critical condition. No police officers or members of the public were physically harmed during the exchange.
Confrontation followed alleged threats
Specific details regarding the nature of the alleged threats remain under investigation, though police confirmed the emergency call-out was treated as high priority. Neighbours in the immediate vicinity reported hearing raised voices followed by the sound of gunfire, before dozens of emergency vehicles descended upon the street.
As reported by ABC News NSW, officers attempted to negotiate with the man before tactical options were deployed. However, NSW Police have declined to confirm whether non-lethal deterrents, such as taser devices or capsicum spray, were utilised prior to lethal force being engaged.
Crime scenes declared and street cordoned
A large perimeter was swiftly established around the confrontation site, with forensic teams sealing off the roadway and establishing an exclusion zone for several blocks. Specialist ballistics examiners and detectives combed the pavement and nearby properties for shell casings, discarded materials, and security camera footage.
Local traffic diversions remained active for several hours across the south-western suburb as investigators conducted door-to-door inquiries. Commuters and local residents were advised by transport authorities to avoid the area while crime scene examinations were underway.
Independent critical incident team launched
In accordance with standard operational protocol, NSW Police announced that a critical incident investigation had been declared. The inquiry is to be spearheaded by detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, operating independently of the local area command involved in the shooting.
The internal review will examine the totality of the circumstances leading up to the discharge of the weapon, including the initial emergency dispatch assessment, the tactical posture adopted by the responding officers, and whether de-escalation measures complied with standard operational guidelines.
Oversight by Law Enforcement Conduct Commission
The critical incident investigation will also be subject to independent oversight by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC), the state's police integrity watchdog. The civilian oversight body routinely monitors investigations into police encounters resulting in death or serious injury to ensure transparency and accountability.
A brief of evidence will ultimately be prepared for the NSW State Coroner should circumstances warrant, while police internal standards bodies will review the deployment of firearms. Senior police representatives emphasised that the investigation is in its formative stages, with formal interviews of the officers involved expected to take place in the coming days.
