Israeli security forces have detained an Al Jazeera journalist during overnight military raids in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron, escalating tensions between the network and the Israeli government.

Montaser Nassar, a correspondent for the Qatar-based international news organisation, was taken into custody in the early hours of Thursday, according to reports published by the network.

Dawn Incursions Across Hebron Governorate

Israeli troops entered multiple neighbourhoods in Hebron and surrounding localities during coordinated pre-dawn operations, carrying out widespread search actions and detaining several individuals. Al Jazeera reported that soldiers apprehended Mr Nassar at his residence before transferring him to an undisclosed military holding facility.

The Israeli military has maintained that its ongoing operations throughout the occupied territory target militant networks and individuals suspected of involvement in security offences. However, Palestinian community leaders and human rights monitors argue the sweeping raids routinely disrupt civilian life and disproportionately ensnare professionals, including reporters and local observers.

Deepening Feud Between Israel and Qatari Broadcaster

The detention of Mr Nassar represents the latest incident in an intensifying campaign directed at Al Jazeera by Israeli authorities. In May, the Israeli government enacted emergency legislation authorising the formal closure of the network’s operations within Israel, leading to the shutdown of its Jerusalem premises and the seizure of transmission equipment over allegations that its reports undermined state security—allegations the broadcaster firmly denies.

The regulatory pressure expanded into the occupied West Bank in September, when heavily armed Israeli troops entered Al Jazeera’s bureau in central Ramallah, serving a 45-day closure order that effectively curtailed its physical presence in the administrative centre of the Palestinian Authority. The network’s correspondents have subsequently been forced to operate under severe operational restrictions.

Rising Peril for Frontline Correspondents

International media monitoring groups have expressed growing concern regarding the deteriorating environment for journalists operating throughout the Palestinian territories. Since the outbreak of open hostilities in October 2023, press freedom organisations have documented record numbers of media personnel detained, injured, or killed while covering military movements.

Organisations including the Committee to Protect Journalists and Reporters Without Borders have repeatedly urged the Israeli government to respect the civilian status of working journalists and guarantee protections under international humanitarian law. Advocates caution that detaining working reporters degrades transparency and deprives the global public of independent accounts from within contested zones.

Broadening Insecurity Across the Territory

The arrest comes amid continuing volatility across the West Bank, where daily military incursions, armed clashes, and movement restrictions have hardened conditions for local populations. Regional analysts warn that unresolved friction between military authorities and international media outlets will further obscure conditions on the ground as tensions remain critical throughout the southern governorates.
