A man and a teenage boy have been arrested after a One Nation volunteer was allegedly struck with a baseball bat outside his coastal Victorian home on Sunday night, police have confirmed.

Victoria Police said detectives apprehended a 37-year-old man from Hampton Park, in Melbourne’s outer south-east, alongside a 14-year-old boy on Tuesday following inquiries into the confrontation in Torquay.

The victim, an active volunteer for Pauline Hanson’s One Nation, was allegedly confronted and assaulted outside his residence on the Surf Coast on Sunday evening. The Guardian Australia reported that the alleged attackers used a baseball bat during the altercation, which left local residents shaken and prompted an immediate regional police response.

Violent Torquay altercation sparks swift arrests

Investigators from Victoria Police were called to the Torquay address late on Sunday after emergency services received reports of an assault in progress. Paramedics treated the One Nation volunteer at the scene before detectives initiated an operation that led to the execution of warrants and the detention of both suspects on Tuesday.

While formal charges had not been finalised by Tuesday afternoon, police confirmed that both the 37-year-old man and the teenager were assisting detectives with their inquiries. Authorities have not yet disclosed whether the pair were known to the victim or if the attack was specifically targeted at his political affiliations.

Detectives examine motive behind Surf Coast incident

Officers are reviewing closed-circuit television footage and neighbourhood dashcam recordings from surrounding Torquay streets, seeking to establish the movements of the alleged offenders prior to and immediately following the incident.

A spokesperson for Victoria Police indicated that investigators were keeping an open mind regarding the motive behind the assault. While the victim’s public role with One Nation has drawn considerable community attention to the case, detectives are examining whether the dispute was ideologically motivated or connected to an unrelated civil grievance.

Heightened scrutiny over volunteer protection

The alleged attack comes amid heightened sensitivity surrounding the safety of political participants and campaign volunteers in Australia. Grassroots party workers, who typically staff polling booths, distribute pamphlets and display signage on behalf of registered parties, have increasingly reported facing heightened hostility during public-facing activities.

While violent physical confrontations targeting campaign workers remain relatively rare in Australian politics, federal and state law enforcement agencies have placed greater emphasis in recent years on monitoring threats directed at political figures and their support staff. Security guidelines have repeatedly stressed the legal protections afforded to all individuals engaged in democratic participation, irrespective of party lines.

Detectives have urged anyone who witnessed the Torquay altercation, or who possesses dashcam or security camera vision from the area recorded on Sunday night, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
