The Duchess of Sussex has signed on to co-host Junior MasterChef Australia in 2027, following a record-breaking guest appearance on the flagship culinary franchise earlier this year.
Guardian Australia Culture reported the Duchess described joining the children’s iteration of the reality cooking juggernaut as “an easy yes”. The casting agreement marks Meghan’s most significant broadcast commitment to Australian television to date.
A ratings windfall for Network 10
The agreement follows an exceptionally lucrative guest spot broadcast in July, when Meghan appeared as a guest judge on the adult edition of MasterChef Australia. That episode was filmed in secrecy during a four-day visit to Australia alongside Prince Harry in April.
Executives at Network 10 subsequently disclosed that the Duchess’s appearance delivered the broadcaster its largest Sunday television audience since 2023, breathing fresh commercial vitality into one of the country's most enduring television properties. The broadcast outperformed rival commercial networks across key metropolitan demographics, underscoring the ongoing appetite among domestic viewers for the royal couple.
The commercial network is now seeking to translate that transient spike in linear ratings into long-term audience loyalty by deploying Meghan across the junior competition when it returns to Australian screens in 2027.
Culinary ties and kitchen camaraderie
Long-time MasterChef judge and culinary personality Poh Ling Yeow praised the Duchess's appointment, remarking that reuniting with Meghan for the youth-focused spin-off “will be a real treat”.
During her guest judging stint earlier this year, observers noted Meghan’s gentle rapport with contestants and her demonstrable literacy in gastronomy—an interest she has cultivated through lifestyle publishing and her patronage of community cooking projects abroad.
Junior MasterChef, which features aspiring home cooks aged between nine and twelve, places a heightened emphasis on encouragement, pastoral care and accessible mentorship. The role is understood to align closely with the Duchess’s broader creative slate, which has leaned into domestic arts, family-focused storytelling and lifestyle programming in recent years.
Long-range scheduling in a shifting broadcast landscape
The announcement of a 2027 airdate reflects both the extended production schedules required for international talent and the strategic planning of free-to-air networks navigating structural advertising headwinds. Securing a marquee global name three years in advance signals Network 10’s resolve to defend its prime-time entertainment slate against encroaching digital streaming platforms.
Industry analysts view the Duchess's involvement as an astute vehicle for Network 10’s parent company, Paramount, to internationalise the Australian format. While terms of the deal remain confidential, talent agreements for overseas figures of Meghan's stature routinely command substantial production resources and tightly managed production windows.
Filming is anticipated to take place in Melbourne, where the MasterChef kitchen has been anchored since the franchise’s inception. Further announcements regarding the full judging panel and production itinerary are expected closer to the commencement of principal photography.
