A teenager has been charged with arson after a ferocious inferno gutted a home in Sydney’s inner west on Saturday morning, leaving an 88-year-old woman and three others hospitalised.
Emergency services were called to the suburban street in Abbotsford before dawn following reports that a single-storey dwelling was well alight. Fire and Rescue NSW crews arrived to find thick smoke billowing into the sky and flames threatening neighbouring residences in the quiet waterside pocket.
ABC News NSW reported that the fire completely destroyed the residence, collapsing the roof and leaving the property a charred shell before crews managed to bring the incident under control.
Fierce early morning blaze engulfs residence
Firefighters confronted extreme heat and rapidly spreading flames as they worked to contain the outbreak. Several crews from across the metropolitan network were dispatched to the address, establishing hose lines along the perimeter to defend adjacent properties against radiant heat and airborne embers.
Firefighters wearing self-contained breathing apparatus entered the structure to search for any trapped occupants and aggressively tackle the seat of the fire. Despite their intervention, the intensity of the flames caused catastrophic damage, with structural assessors later declaring the home a total loss due to severe internal collapse.
Elderly occupant among four rushed to hospital
Inside the property when the blaze erupted was an 88-year-old woman, alongside three other occupants who managed to escape into the street as flames engulfed the building. Paramedics from NSW Ambulance treated the four at the scene for smoke inhalation and associated trauma.
All four victims were transported to metropolitan hospitals for ongoing assessment and monitoring. Health authorities confirmed that while the elderly resident suffered significant respiratory distress from toxic fumes, all four patients remained in stable conditions.
Neighbours reported waking to the sound of sirens, exploding glass, and the pungent smell of smoke drifting across the peninsula. Several nearby residents rushed outdoors with garden hoses in a desperate attempt to assist before emergency services arrived.
Arson detectives lay charges against teenager
Detectives from the NSW Police Force declared the property a crime scene as soon as the embers were doused, restricting access to allow specialist arson squad detectives and forensic officers to comb through the debris.
Following inquiries and witness interviews, officers arrested a 17-year-old male in connection with the incident, ABC News NSW reported. The teenager was taken into custody and conveyed to a local police station, where investigators formally charged him with multiple offences, including destroying property by fire with disregard for human life.
The youth was refused bail to face a children’s court. Detectives are continuing to investigate the precise timeline of events and any relationship between the accused and the household.
Abbotsford neighbourhood grapples with destruction
The devastation has shaken residents in the tightly held peninsula suburb, where serious structural fires are rare. Local council officers attended the scene to assist emergency crews in fencing off the perimeter and clearing hazardous debris from public footpaths.
Specialist investigators are expected to remain at the site over the weekend to finalise their forensic examination. Police have urged anyone who witnessed suspicious movements in the area, or motorists with relevant dashcam footage, to contact Crime Stoppers.
