A 19-year-old woman has died in hospital after masked gunmen fired indiscriminately into a crowd outside a popular venue in Brisbane’s south, in an attack that wounded three others.
The victim, identified as Vana-Reese Schuster-Togiatau of Jimboomba, succumbed to critical gunshot wounds to her head and neck, following the late-night shooting outside Fitzy’s Loganholme on Saturday.
Deadly drive-by ambush outside Fitzy’s
The Guardian Australia reported that Ms Schuster-Togiatau had been socialising with companions at the venue when the assailants approached in a vehicle and unleashed a hail of gunfire towards patrons gathered near the entrance.
Emergency services were called to the Bryants Road establishment shortly before midnight, confronting chaotic scenes as patrons and security staff attempted to render first aid to the critically injured teenager. Paramedics treated Ms Schuster-Togiatau at the scene before transferring her under emergency conditions to hospital, where she later died from catastrophic trauma.
Indiscriminate gunfire leaves three others wounded
Three other bystanders sustained injuries during the rapid discharge of bullets and were transported to local hospitals. Their injuries, which included shrapnel damage and graze wounds, are not believed to be life-threatening.
Investigators are working to determine whether the shooting was a targeted strike aimed at specific individuals standing outside the venue, with Ms Schuster-Togiatau caught in the crossfire, or a reckless attack on the crowd at large. Initial evidence indicates the shooters concealed their identities with face coverings and fled at high speed immediately after discharging multiple rounds.
Police pursue masked suspects across south-east Queensland
Queensland Police established an extensive crime scene spanning the venue's entrance and carpark. Forensic teams spent Sunday combing the tarmac for ballistic fragments and discarded shell casings, while detectives seized closed-circuit television recordings from the hotel and surrounding commercial premises.
Detectives have urged motorists who travelled along the Pacific Motorway corridor or through Loganholme between 11pm on Saturday and 1am on Sunday to provide any dashcam footage. Specialised taskforces have joined the homicide investigation, assessing whether the brazen shooting bears links to organised crime syndicates or ongoing factional disputes in the region.
No suspects had been taken into custody by Monday, and investigators have warned that the perpetrators should be considered armed and dangerous.
Community grief follows senseless weekend violence
The killing of Ms Schuster-Togiatau has prompted deep sorrow across the Jimboomba and Logan communities, where friends and family gathered to mourn a young life cut short during a weekend outing.
Civic leaders have expressed alarm at the public nature of the violence, condemning the use of high-powered weapons in a suburban entertainment precinct. Police presence has been bolstered across major hospitality strips in Brisbane's southern suburbs as detectives continue their appeal for public assistance to trace the getaway vehicle.
